Surveying rental equipment, such as vac boxes, frac tanks, trailers, and scrap bins can prevent “head-aches” when disposing of material and metal. Equipment is rented out to multiple clients and facilities, over large operating areas, and equipment that has not been washed out or properly emptied can provide “hot” readings at disposal facilities and scrap yards. This can lead to disputes between the rental equipment vendor and the operator/producer, as to who is responsible for the contamination. To avoid this situation, it is recommended that all bulk container rental equipment associated with oil and gas production is surveyed for NORM/TENORM upon delivery. It is also recommended that Master Service Agreements and contracts are revised to include legal language stating that rental equipment vendors are responsible for providing rental equipment that is free of NORM contamination. In order to confirm that rental equipment is free of contamination, the equipment must be surveyed upon delivery, before use.
